Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010 from Sean Stiegemeier on Vimeo.

American photographer Sean Stiegemeier saw all of these mediocre pictures of the volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, and he figured he should go there and do better. He made this time-lapse video of what happened on May 1st and 2nd, 2010.

Where Cursors Come From

Millions of computers are made each year and still no one talks about sustainability in the cursor industry. We should, because according to this poster they’re being cut down at an alarming rate. We’re in luck that Nathan W Pyle has designed this poster informing us about the massive cursor deforestation going on.

Moments.

William Hoffman is a New York filmmaker who put this video together and uploaded it last August. It’s finally getting some viral activity, and rightfully so. It’s “a celebration of life that was inspired by David Eagleman’s book, Sum.”

Vatican says aliens could exist (some even free from original sin).

Writing in the Vatican newspaper, the astronomer, Father Gabriel Funes, said intelligent beings created by God could exist in outer space.  The official Vatican newspaper headlines his article 'Aliens Are My Brother'.  The search for forms of extraterrestrial life, he says, does not contradict belief in God. Just as there are multiple forms of life on earth, so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God. And some aliens could even be free from original sin, he speculates.

The picture does not represent an alien free from original sin – just a random alien.  Link.

Aerogel.

Known mostly for its use in gently catching particles ejected from Comet Wild 2, aerogel is a sort of foamy glass. Both are silicon-based solids yet aerogel is only 0.02 percent solid by volume – the rest is empty space! Weighing just 3 times as much as air, aerogel has earned itself the nickname “frozen smoke” and among its many claims to fame are 15 entries in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The World Trade Center Tightrope Dance.

Philipe Petit didn’t realize that going to the dentist in 1968 would change his life. But, after seeing an article about the construction of the new World Trade Center towers in New York City, Petit became obsessed. After spending six years planning and researching, Petit decided the time was right to string a 140 foot steel cable between the “Twin Towers” (1,368 feet of the ground mind you) and step off the ledge. He spent 45 minutes on the wire, crossing between the towers 8 times. The police were dispatched to arrest him as soon as they realized what was going on, but Petit continued to enjoy himself on his wire until the threat of a helicopter plucking him off the wire (and rain) helped him end his tightrope dance. He was taken into custody and the incident is still referred to as the “artistic crime of the century”.

Quote of the day.

If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.
Anatole France.

Monkey Picked Tea.

This rare chinese tea is carefully picked by specially trained monkeys in a remote mountain region of China. Legend has it that monkeys were first used to collect tea ten centuries ago, because upon seeing its master trying to reach some tea growing wild on a mountain face, the monkey climbed up the steep face and collected the tea growing there and brought it down to his master.

Nowadays the practice of monkeys picking tea has all but died out, except in one small remote village where they still continue this remarkable tradition.

Quote of the day.

Many people would sooner die than think; in fact, they do so.
Bertrand Russell.

Crime Scene Cleaners Inc.

The police, the fire department and the crime-scene investigators who arrive at a crime scene perform crucial tasks in the aftermath of a violent death. But they don't, as a general rule, clean up. Mopping up after someone who dies violently is the responsibility of that person's family. Now there is a company, called Crime Scene Cleaner Inc., that can handle the dirty job, literally. It's a cleaning maintenance service specializing in the cleanup of homicide, suicide and accidental deaths. The company offers services of cleaning, disinfecting and removal of all contaminated items to restore the scene to a safe, non-biohazardous state. Link: http://www.crimescenecleaners.com/
