BOINC: Use the idle time on your computer to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars...

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is a non-commercial system for volunteer and grid computing. You can donate computer time (Windows, Mac, or Linux) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. It's safe, secure, and easy.

  1. If you find BOINC interesting I suggest checking out the non-profit GridRepublic.

GridRepublic has been working to make BOINC easier to use. They make it easier to find, join, and manager one or more projects and computers. http://www.gridrepublic.org

They also worked with Intel on the Facebook App Progress Thru Processors so that people can join and share their invovlement through social media. http://www.facebook.com/progressthruprocessors

These sites provide a download which is the BOINC software with a custom installer and simple view plus a different default screensaver.
